The Syriac Universal Alliance Receives and Gives Back
This is a call to action. This is our time to give back. This is our time to work not for ourselves, but for our people. This is the undeniable strength of our people, seen daily by the assistance we provide to our churches, our organizations, our clergy, and our families.
Now, the Syriac Universal Alliance, the official United Nations Non?Governmental Organization which represents our people globally, is calling on you to provide much needed help to each other – through the Syriac Universal Alliance. We need volunteers for important work to be done. Now our opportunity to give is here – the most important gift of all is our time.
In 1794, a German scholar by the name of D.H. Hegewisch brought attention to the worthy contributions made by our great ancestors to their societies. The opening words of his article were:
“Should not the Syriacs, as they are usually called, or the Arameans, as they are actually called, deserve more attention in world history than they are usually given?”
Now the Syriac Universal Alliance is fighting for just that. More worldwide attention for the Aramean (Syriac) people and more protections of rights that have so long waned in the distance.
History comes alive
Ancient history can be boring sometimes. But when it concerns our ancestors, the distance of time and space is soon dissolved and it becomes personal to us – at least to me. History then can come alive, become meaningful and turn into a present reality. Before we know it, we can hear the sweet voices of our ancestors miraculously speaking to us.
Our ancestors tell us how they approached both exciting and difficult situations in their day, while lovingly advising us today and tomorrow. They reveal to us their most precious gem in life: their inner being, sanctified and continuously strengthened by Jesus Christ. Their love for Christ is like a pearl that was constantly threatened and therefore had to be hidden by so many. As a result, its shine and vibrancy diminished over time.
Today, in our noisy and busy societies, it is no longer easy to listen to the soft voices of our forefathers. Many would agree that we have been distracted or allured by other sounds that please our ears. But if we earnestly yearn to hear our ancestors whispering to us, we can hear the gems of wisdom counseling us: “My child, while you have shoes on your feet, tread down the thorns and make a path for your children and for your grandchildren.” (Ahikar, the Aramean sage, fl. 8th?7th centuries BC).
Time for action
Today, the time has come to listen carefully to the whispering voice of our ancestors. We must listen to them by investing in a bright and promising future. Not just anybody’s future, but our common future and that of our posterity.
We must preserve, continue to develop and pass on to our progeny two of their greatest gifts to us; namely our rich but endangered cultural heritage and our national ethos.
Our forefathers have blessed us in many ways with our glorious and ancient heritage. Each day, this source of inspiration proves to fill our hearts with pride and joy wherever we live in the diaspora. Therefore, I believe the time has come to honor our ancestors by giving back to them, to our people.
We must ask ourselves: ‘Does our forgotten people deserve more attention from us than we have given them so far?’
The Syriac Universal Alliance attempts by all possible means to do this and loyally serve the Aramean (Syriac) people. Our mission is as clear as it can be:
“We, the Syriac Universal Alliance, shall answer the call to protect and secure the Rights, Liberty and Equality of the Aramean (Syriac) People, safeguard and promote the Cultural Heritage of our ancestors, ensure Justice, and unite all of our People as an independent and internationally recognized Aramean (Syriac) Nation.”
